2020 Winner
Katie Holmes
Teen with cerebral palsy inspires others, raises money and refuses to let her condition define her.
Katie’s condition was caused by a bleed on the brain when she was born prematurely at 28 weeks. Since then, she has undergone five major operations to help her walk. She has metal rods in her legs, and uses sticks for support.
But the teenager is determined not to let the condition define her and has taken on a number of charity challenges including the Great Manchester Run. Katie says: “I want to show people that no matter what hurdle is put in front of them, anything is possible. I am just trying to be the best version of me – it might take me a little longer to get to the finish line, but I will do it.
“Now that I’m older I have started to look at my disability differently, I try and use it as a platform to raise awareness and to show people what it is like to live with cerebral palsy, to show the struggles and the ups and downs.”
Last year Katie, 15, decided to write a blog about her life with cerebral palsy and created an Instagram account. As a result a designer got in touch and asked her to take part in London Fashion Week.
Katie was surprised with her Pride of Manchester award by our host Kym Marsh and television presenter, actor and former Strictly star Karim Zeroual.
Her mum Emma said: “She actually screamed and covered her whole face with her hand. Receiving an award was not something she expected.”
Katie added: “I still feel so shocked – Karim always makes me laugh on television! I feel so proud that I have won this award and I can’t wait to tell my friends and teachers.”
